Street art - or graffiti - has become a large element in today’s art world. Hardly any city or town is without the messy handwriting or sloppy spraypaint across the walls. However, the true art and technique of graffiti is rarely publicized or even mentioned in the media. Graffiti is quite possible the “lost” art medium - constantly criticized except by those involved. Take a look at some truly inspiring street art - get inspired, get creative.

This selection is a mix of “old school” street art - a more simplistic and traditional approach, as well as some newer styles - vivid colors, and wild styles. If I wanted to show you every amazing graffiti picture I could find, this post would be hundreds of pages long. I am hoping that this selection will inspire you to find your own - whether it be in the real world or on the internet.

What do you think? Inspired? Tell me what you think about graffiti and its artistic influence on todays society. **I do not support vandalism or degradation of public property. Use graffiti as an inspiration for yourself and your art, not as a rebellious way to express your thoughts. Also, keep in mind that this art is not my own, and the credit goes out to these amazing artist.

I have seen some amazing collections of graffiti. The colors and movement within then is astounding. Unfortunately, a lot of times the letters can so stylized I can’t read them. They are still great to look at, maybe that’s the point.

Street art kicks ass. I love banksy’s most. But eh.. some chalk stuff is pretty awesome. Julian Beaver’s sidewalk art is absolutely amazing… so many people are trying to reproduce it now.

I never heard of that - what happened? I just google’d it and couldn’t find anything really relevant so maybe you could fill me in.

Here’s a link to it (delete if you want) http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5335400.stm

Basically he put a life sized man dressed in an orange jump suit with a black bag on its head just inside one of the rides gates. The article gives a bit of information on some other stunts as well, like putting fake albums in record shops, changing the cover art for some records, etc.

I have always ‘mostly’ respected these artists. As with anything, you will always get the few that use it for less creative purposes, using colourful but inappropriate wording.

But for the most part, even in our loca skate and bmx park, the various steel ramps are already showing signs of life. And for the most part, I enjoy seeing what comes up next.

The authorities seem to be cleaning or repainting them frequently, maybe to allow new designs to flourish? Or is that just wishful thinking. Its more like they are trying to win a battle that in these areas they will just not win. If its respectful (i mean language wise, non offensive, then anything that colours up my day with creativity and imagination I am all for. England can be so glum and grey…

But these examples are amazing, truly wonderful.

@Gary - thanks. Quite amazing stuff. Its awesome how the public is rallying in his support for the messages he is making about politics and society.

@Graham - Of course there will always be the “less creative” stuff out there. Thats where graffiti gets so much criticism I would think. But for the sake of inspiration, graffiti is a great place to look to get some creative ideas.

I personally think that graffiti is fun to look at and the people who create it have amazing talent. I love the bright a vivid graffiti which is why when I get stopped by a train I’m entertained at all the tags on the train cars. Obviously, vandalizing other people’s property is wrong but it’s still pretty.
