I recently had the opportunity to get a few minutes of Magnus Jepson’s time for a quick interview. I hope you all enjoy this interview and be sure to check out his site!
.
1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. Background, personal, work, etc.
I’m a 28 year old guy from the fifth largest city in Norway called Stavanger. I’ve studied IT and worked in a programming job for 7 years now, where I’ve been developing a point of sale system used in the big electronic chains in Scandinavia and a few other countries.
.
My hobbies include playing guitar, golf when it’s not raining and fly fishing for trout and salmon when it is raining
.
2. How long have you been a freelance web designer?
.
I’ve been making web sites for about 4-5 years, but I never promoted myself any more than having a portfolio. I felt that I needed to improve my skills, so I started making some free wordpress themes, and it didn’t take long before I felt they were good enough where I could actually start charging for them. This was in November and now I get requests for custom blogs and websites. I guess I just underestimated the popularity of Wordpress.
.
3. What is your main inspiration when doing web design work?
.
My inspiration comes from endless hours surfing around the web and following design galleries and designers and see what they come up with. Being able to visualize something and then making it in Photoshop is really inspirational as well. I don’t get that part with coding so much because a program looks just as boring as the last, while a web site can look totally different.
.
4. What makes your designs stand out?
.
I’m not sure. I’m always a bit too modest about my designs, but I guess that I have an attention to detail and element spacing that some designers are lacking. When designing Wordpress themes I try to make them look a bit different than the other premium themes out there.
.
5. What has been your greatest mistake in your online business?
.
Underestimating the amount of time and work that goes into making a website. I’ve really undershot my quotes because of this, and in the future I will try to take on fewer projects so I can focus on making more themes. When you make a web site for a customer you put your ideas into the design and think it looks great, and then end up changing the design because the customer didn’t like it…
.
I guess the customer is always right, but as a designer I’m supposed to know what looks good right? That’s why I want to make more Wordpress themes for my site, because I decide how the theme will look. I really don’t like projects where I use 10% of my time designing and then the rest on coding… That becomes boring.
.
6. Is there anything else you would like the readers to know about you or your business?
.
Well I think my designs speak for themselves, so I would hope your readers will take a look at my main portfolio (www.jepson.no) and my Wordpress site (wordpress.jepson.no)
.
.
There you guys have it. Magnus is really cranking out some amazing wordpress themes that most of us wish we could make. His designs have become a huge inspiration to me over the last few weeks and I’m sure the same will go for you too. Take a few minutes, check out his portfolio, and maybe hit him up with a little link love!
