Brian: Hi Fabio, thanks for agreeing to this interview. Please tell us a little bit about yourself and your background on the internet.
Fabio: Thank you very much for this opportunity
Well I’m a graphic designer but I’ve been working with web design since 1999, actually I started playing with this thing called internet a little bit earlier, in 96. It was the very beginning, I remember I used to save pages on my computer to see how they were made, the codes and stuff like that. In 2004 I started my own web design studio, Zee.

Brian: How have you evolved as a blogger and designer since 2006, the founding year of Abduzeedo?
Fabio: The story behind Abduzeedo is quite crazy because I had never thought of creating a blog, then in 2006 my office was robbed and they took my laptop and 2 external hard drives with all my backups. I found myself lost and decided to start a blog to backup my files and also to share my experiences and experiments in design and of course photoshop.

Brian: Your design style seems to be largely involved with vibrant colors, typography, and space. Where did this style come from?
Fabio: I think it’s the influence of my generation, the 80′s with those neon lights, light effects, the video-games (atari).

Brian: Where do you go to find design inspiration both on and off the web?
Fabio: I believe inspiration is everywhere, it’s not all about finding it but most of the time knowing what you’re looking for, I believe if you have a clear idea of what you have to do and the audience you will be working for it’s much easier to “find” inspiration, we can narrow the options and perhaps the most important thing, we can sort of neutralize our personal opinion, because in the majority of works we’re not the target audience so we cannot let our personal opinion and influences interfere in the creative process.

Brian: Abduzeedo posts hundreds of links to inspirational art and designs. How do you organize your finds? What tools or apps do you use to manage the resources you’ve compiled?
Fabio: Since the beginning of the blog the idea was to share things we find online everyday and that inspire us. We still do that, we don’t have much planning, we post things that inspire us. Some contributors started series of posts so they can organize themselves, like the Perfect Office, Friday Fresh Free Fonts, Best of the Week and the daily inspiration are examples. If we do not post those there will be one or some readers sending email to us asking about what happened.
One thing we use a lot is the abduzeedo email, we use only one account, a gmail account where all the emails from abduzeedo are redirected to it. There we have labels so all contributors can read what’s going on with the blog, the suggestions, critics and stuff like that.

Brian: How do you split your time between Abduzeedo and Zee, your freelance design studio? Which project do you prefer?
Fabio: I’ve been focusing more and more on Abduzeedo, while Fabiano and my brother take care of Zee. I help them with the creative direction on projects but I do not participate in the negotiations and business side of the process.

Brian: What advice would you offer to young entrepreneurs looking to establish themselves in the online world?
Fabio: First thing and most important thing that you have to do what you like to do, you have to be passionate about it. I always liked to play with photoshop and try different things, but before Abduzeedo I used to keep my experiments to myself. After the robbery I start sharing them and that promoted my name out there, giving me the chance to work on really cool projects for MSNBC, Wired Magazine, Digital Arts, PSDTUTS and many others. The web is all about content, if you have a good content people will find you.
Thanks again to Fabio Sasso for this insightful interview. Please feel free to leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below!
