Getting Out Of The Money Mindset

After reading several blogs and doing my bit of research, it seems to me that over the last few years the blogging community has become less of a community and more of a marketplace. This can be taken in two ways:

1. Bloggers are averaging more income per blog.
2. There is more income being generated from the internet.

While these are positive aspects of blogging in todays society, there are also negative effects.

1. There is a diminishing level of communication between readers and writers.
2. The original intention of a blog has shifted from connecting with people to making a quick buck

I want to explain to you why you should get out of the “make money” mindset and shift back into the “connect with readers” aspect of your blog.

Ever since I started my blog, which was not too long ago, my goals and ambitions have totally changed. Just over a month ago, I created Elite By Design in hopes of making enough money to make life a little more comfortable. Today, I have almost forgotten money and am focusing more on the people. While it would be a lie to say that I wouldn’t like a little extra income on the side, it would be the truth to say that it is not a priority any longer.

Here’s why:
I believe that the ultimate key to creating a successful blog is to create it with the right mindset. People who focus on monetization and advertising often find themselves neglecting content and originality - a combination that will result in failure. People that forget that the whole idea of a blog is to share ideas and not shove some banner up in the reader’s face often find themselves regretting even having started their online career.

If I can create a stable reader base and keep pumping out consistent content I know that the money will follow. If I get more traffic, people will be more inclined to advertise on my site and I will get more click throughs to affiliate programs.

I have certainly realized over this last month that while yes, some money can be both helpful and pleasant, the ultimate satisfaction comes from hearing people’s opinions and responses to my ideas. It is such an accomplished feeling to know that people are reading what you have to say and are able to form their own opinions and share their ideas with the simple click of a mouse. This connection is what drives me and many other bloggers out there to keep writing more articles and strive to become both a better person and a better blogger.

As long as I can help everyone else, I know I will get feedback and support in return. This mutual, yet unspoken, agreement between writers and readers allows me to be confident in the fact that the less I worry about money, the more I can expect in the future.

I hope you enjoyed my article - let me know what you think and how you go about making money and connecting with your readers.

    Brian,

Very nicely written .., mt personal experience with blogging was exactly as you described - set it up to share what I know, with monetization options built in but not been obnoxious and income followed almost immediately.

But I have started delivering information that was needed right off the bat. So the moral of the story - take care of your reader and they will appreciate it and reward you, even if indirectly!

Nice post, kind of what I’ve been thinking about lately…realizing that it really isn’t all that easy, that after you set up your blog the money don’t just come falling out of the sky into your wallet, but that it takes work, and lots of it.

@Alex - thank you. You are exactly right. It is all about getting a few dedicated readers to back you up

@Tyler - Thanks to you too. I’m glad you’ve come to that realization too. And I think that the idea that money will automatically flow causes many blogs to die out in a short time.
