Artist Allure: A Vitaly S Alexius Showcase

Vitaly S Alexius is an innovative graphic artist with a style all of his own, and of his own making. Born in Novokuznetsk, located on the Tom River in south central Siberian Russia in the year of our Big Brother (1984, for all those not acquainted with the reference). With a fascination in all things celestial and a wide range of artistic backgrounds, add a dash of Photoshop enthusiasm, and Vitaly has created a unique artistic voice that shines like the stars from the heavens above. Early in his life, Vitaly grew up in the European architecture and factories that surrounded him,and he immersed himself in it. In the late 90’s Vitaly found himself inexplicably launched overseas to Toronto, Canada where he completed his artistic education and gave rise to his style which he named ’Dreaminism’. Vitaly is currently working in illustration and photography exploring a variety of outlets such as CD/book/comic covers, posters, concept art and more.

Modern Magic

Modern Magic was a design done for the cover of the New Yorker magazine where we see Vitaly’s love for looming architecture take form. The piece offers a contrast whereas a large metropolis brimming with polluted clouds of air is pitted against a serene cottage resting atop one of the massive structures being bathed cleanly in a vast ray of sunlight.

Machinery of the Stars

Machinery of the Stars is a dazzling digital display born of a simple concept. ‘Perhaps there is another you, looking up in the sky, across the universe?’ From this simple ponderance, Vitaly turned to his love of the celestial, painting a breathtaking explosion of astral machinery above an expansive cityscape, and a lone person taking it all in lost in the question that inspired the piece.

Symphony of Darkness

Symphony of Darkness is so aptly named it is almost as frightening as the piece itself. This brilliant blend of the macabre and surreal creates a scene of beautiful horror that will stick in your mind for days. There is not much else to say about this work that it does not say for itself, not to mention the aid of the verse the artist attached to it.

Consonance

Consonance is a piece that grew from the idea that ‘music is about harmony, like a growing tree’. This inspiring illustration was created as for a school assignment based on the theme ‘Classical Music’, and the monotone creation with subtle flecks of color grant it that ageless flow that create the harmony it reaches for.

Collision of Worlds

Collision of Worlds is another amazing digital masterpiece with a nod to the stellar wonders that fascinated Vitaly as a child. With potent imagination and stunning astral imagery this vibrant creation explodes across the digital canvas coming to life with remarkable ease. No doubt about it, this is what’s like when worlds collide!

Starcatchers

Starcatchers is by far the most colorful and rich piece that we have gathered from Vitaly’s gallery. Both in depth and scope, this surrealistic extravaganza delivers the truest essence of art. The artist’s included verse eloquently aids the piece so we shall let them say their part.

When it comes to blogging and online content management systems, one name is spoken more often than any other: WordPress. Probably the most unique theme I have seen in a while, this visually stunning theme, not to mention how technically interesting it is, makes me think of flipping through a book. An easy addition to the list, without question. I expect to see this cropping up all over the web.

Branding goes deep these days. Logos are not the only way web designers are leaving their mark on the world wide web. They are scaling down their focus to 16 pixels by 16 pixels, making a different kind of mark altogether. Favicons have exploded across the expanse of cyberspace, cropping up in browser tabs and address bars everywhere. These tiny pixel art impressions of the site can be a daunting task for a designer. With such a small canvas for creation, how does one capture the essence of the site? Well, they may be petite, but we found some examples of fashionable favicons that brilliantly use this minuscule medium with both skill and verve.

Flash Hijacked – Let Our Soundcard Go!

So let’s start off with a disclaimer: This article is not in anyway intended to diminish the numerous, dynamic advancements that Flash has introduced into the design and development community. This is not the kind of article meant to demean its many valuable contributions that have had a transforming effect since the program’s inception.

We have, in fact, acknowledged the desire of the design community to use this staple for video creation and web inclusion when we put together the post Tutorials That Will Teach You Flash. So we get it, we do. All we’re are saying is that it’s not all good, all the time.

In fact, with all of the positives that this program can yield, we only have one complaint. So it’s not even like our complaint really brings down the average at all. And that complaint is this: Stop hijacking our sound!

If we want to listen to what ever it is you’ve deemed so necessary, then we will make the necessary adjustments to make your sound audible. But you should never get to make that decision for us. That’s the point.

Now we are not trying to get belligerent and begin claiming that this is in any way a civil liberties issue. We are not proclaiming that it is some kind of constitutionally guaranteed citizen’s right to have full control over their soundcard at all times. Though it should be.

So that is what we are saying. An amendment would be nice, but we’ll settle for an honest handshake and a meaningful word. Because it’s just so annoying sometimes. Isn’t it?

It’s not our fault that the audio accompaniment that you find so enthralling, to us is akin to fingernails across a chalkboard. Now it is completely within the rights of the designer when using Flash to include the fingernails across a chalkboard into their creation. We are simply putting forth that we should not be forced to suffer through this kind of unexpected and uninvited interruption should we choose not to. Is that really too much to ask?

Bottom line, your design is your design. And at the end of the day, the choice is yours if you want to include some kind of sound to help convey your site, your message, or whatever. But maybe you should ask yourself how necessary this element of your design really is. Does it truly aid the overall creation? Or is it completely superfluous, and merely thrown in because you think it’s kind of cool?

Perhaps you should figure into your calculations of necessity that many people do not share your sentiment, and may not return to your site or even stick around to absorb any of it in the first place. Based solely on this one element. If it doesn’t aid the design, it detracts from it. Or so we’ve heard. We are pretty sure we read that somewhere. Long way around, let our soundcards go!

8 Adobe Air Applications That Will Rock Your World Wide Web

A new set of applications launched recently, or rather a new way to run applications that is, and it’s having quite an impact on the online community. This new line of platform independent shells are the new Adobe AIR releases. The Adobe AIR runtimes allow it’s users to run web based routines free of a browser, rather deploying them to directly to the desktop, granting them functionality across multiple operating systems allowing for freer and easier access to some of the user’s favorite online accessories.

Being a relatively new resource, there are only a handful of Air applications currently covering the community. But, given it’s ingenious platform independence freeing it of many restrictions that frustrate users, predictions are in that this number will grow exponentially over the course of the next couple of years. Could this be one of the revolutionary new changes that dominate and define the course of programming for the next generation of web based applications? Well, one thing’s for sure, it doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon. Too many avid online addicts are already singing the praises of these self-supporting shells. So we have decided to examine a few of these apps, and here are the reviews.

You will need to download and install the latest version of Adobe Air to run the following applications.

1. Klok

For most everyone, time is of the essence in almost every facet of daily life. For freelancers, especially, time is money, and keeping on schedule is the key to keeping ahead of the game. That’s where Klok comes in. Klok is a hugely convenient and easy to use time management system that makes veering off your timetable virtually a thing of the past.

As completely customizable as it is user-friendly, Klok works in user defined categories and subcategories to track your time so you don’t have to. Either allowing the operator to intiate the timer under any particular heading as they begin working, or they can put in specific blocks of time manually, after the fact. Couple that with drag and drop Excel timesheets, and graphical reports based on any selected timeframe and this is a freelancer must. This quickly became the most used application on the PC.

2. MiniTask

Another Adobe AIR app that works hand in hand with a time management system for keeping you on task and ahead of the curve is a to-do list. And MiniTask is the best to-do list manager I’ve found, and not just because of it’s ease of use. Okay, that is a large portion of it. Staying organized is the key to staying focused on your objectives when multi-tasking life and work, so MiniTask is an efficiency expert that you need on your side.

With customization being key, MiniTask stands up to the test, and then some. Giving the user full control over the settings and functions of the application. Operator assigned headers separate the different items on the list into the appropriate categories, grouping together all similar projects for easier management. To keep the organizational flow moving the user can drag and drop list items putting them in any order desired. Reminders can be set to automatically send up a notice to the user to keep certain items of importance from passing their due date. MiniTask is definitely a keeper from the AIR repretiore that will gracing my desktop for some time.

3. Twhirl vs. Tweetdeck

As social media takes over the blogosphere landscape, Twitter raises tall among the media masses as the central communication hub for so many, and AIR has an answer for that as well. Twhirl. Simply a great manager for any twitterer who operates multiple accounts. All of the new updates are announced by a subtle sound effect (which can easily be disabled if so desired). The new messages posted are automatically delivered to your screen in a small pop-up window. Getting to read the incoming tweets as they go live, makes the posting more accessible than having to cycle through pages of backed up tweets from time spent away from the site. All of the site functions have been transfered to this compact companion allowing for quick follow ups to posts. The user can send direct messages, re-tweet posts they found helpful, and even reply to messages all from the desktop driven app.

Though even with the bells and whistles that Twhirl provides, given overall functionality, I actually prefer 4. Tweetdeck. With all of the same ease of use site functions capable from this Twitter managment system, and the added bonus of being able to group other users into categories to help keep on subject, I found Tweetdeck a better application. However, it’s inability to manage multiple Twitter accounts has temporarily rendered it a secondary status for those of us who operate more than one account. That forced me to find an alternative. Though, according to an interview on Refreshing Apps with Iain Dodsworth, the creator of Tweetdeck, this is something he’s working on for tweetdeck right now and should be available soon. At that point, a re-evaluation will be in order!

5. Snackr

Speaking of simplifying how you handle your feeds, developers have used the Adobe AIR framework to address this with regards to RSS feeds as well. And they’ve done it in a uniquely creative way with Snackr. The Snackr app creates a desktop crawl for the different feeds the user loads into it. Giving a continuously scrolling ticker of the different article titles filtering in from your feeder in no particular order. Adding a dab of fun into the daily managing your reads.

At first there was the fear that the AIR app would bog down the computer and significantly slow any other processes that are running alongside Snackr. But after running it for sometime, it proved to not interfere with other operations, however Snackr itself would drag a bit, but not with any kind of disruptive regularity. The user can simply click on a headline they are interested in to stop the ticker’s movement, and to get a summary of the article. An option then allows for the reader to be taken to the post on the blog via their internet browser. Snackr conveniently tucks away behind open applications unless the user decides to bring it to the front. Though fun, it still seems a bit obtrusive, even being anchored at the bottom of the screen, and I found that I could never bring myself to focus much attention it’s way.

6. Google Analytics Reporting Suite

When making a living in the vast sea of cyberspace, keeping track of all of the traffic to your website may be of interest, and AIR has taken that on as well. Analytics Reporting works by combining all of the user’s different tracking accounts and reports them all to your desktop, rather than making you chase them down via the Google Analytics website. It’s another way that AIR developers are making your online life easier.

While accessing these analytical stats can be pretty handy without having to sort through the web, I found this app to be the least one used out of the set that I reviewed. The program itself was well built and overall simple and functional, however, I still find myself just going to the analytics website more often than not before even thinking of the app. Maybe it was just out of habit, but this one was accidently avoided more than it was used. Now if there was a need for having these reports constantly accessible, then this would be an automatic go to application.

7. Remember The Milk Notifier

Back to keeping organization in the forefront, Adobe AIR has a runtime that works with Remember The Milk. The online personal scheduler now has help to keep their users alert and from falling too far behind. The Remember The Milk Notifier is another simple and useful addition to the app list. If you are currently using the website to set up and keep up with your calendar. If not, then it might prove be less useful than some of the others.

Being a user, this was a fortuoutus find. Having an application that rests in the taskbar ready to jog the user’s memory, at a frequency determined by the operator, is handy. Any remember the milk reminder that has come due or become overdue will be cropping up on the desktop to keep it from falling from memory. Just remember to set the minutes between notifications to a high frequency or the constant reminders may render the user certifiably insane.

8. Pandora

It has often been said that music can tame the savage beast, and if it hasn’t been said often, well then at least it was said a moment ago (and if you read it several times then the original statement proves true). But as someone who enjoys having music in the background as I’m working, having a Pandora app is useful. Developers have brought the online personal radio station to the web free shell, that frees up the system resources having your browser open can drain.

The personal stations Pandora creates, based on the user’s tastes, are all available from the app window. Another bonus to having a pandora app outside of the browser, is that it doesn’t close in the middle of a favorite song ending the music because I have forgotten that the song was coming from the web, and not a media player. That is a big bonus to what is one of the less practical of the AIR applications. This runtime is more for fun, and there it succeeds.

Artist Fervor – A David Fuhrer Showcase

David Fuhrer aka Microbot is a designer and freelancer in his early twenties, living in Switzerland. With a focus on illustration and CGI, and an even tighter focus on intricate detailing, this talented young man’s grand scale designs are some of the most inspiring and exciting work to flourish from the community. Fuhrer’s work is a rare treat for the eyes and the mind as the depth of his work is as mesmerizing as the feel that his pieces exude. Blue Moon

The first piece we are featuring from Fuhrer’s expansive portfolio, is Blue Moon. An awesome digital fantasy landscaping of a planet with the range and weight that seem to define a portion of his style. The close-ups show the layered flow of the overall design. Metal Heart

The next piece is rather a lovely dark look at the metaphor of the machine that runs our lives, our heart. Metal Heart is a beautiful comment on the way we guard our hearts, hardening them against the cold, cruel space that stifles us. The close-ups reveal the truth beneath the surface. Our vulnerabilities, preyed upon by imposed senses of responsibility, reacting at the first sign of exposed weakness. Oh, yeah, and it’s also cool that you can see a Blue Moon representation in the background behind the heart. And if you go back and look at the first piece, you can see a small distant heart shaped object in the upper right corner of Blue Moon. Yet another interesting layer to the works.

Drug Free Zone

The third piece is much more whimsical than some of the other featured works we have here by Fuhrer, but it nevertheless encapsulates the essence of the artists nature. This fantastical fearie-esque treehouse community carved playfully out of the tree it’s a part of. The close-ups give a better look at the rich texture and intricate detail of the buildings and constructions. And P.S. check the sign. This is a Drug Free Zone!

Microcity

The next piece of David’s work that we showcase, is Microcity. A digital futuristic cityscape looming against a vacant sky with a somewhat sinister tone. This microcosm of human technological achievement brilliantly brought to life with this illustrator’s grace of design. The close-up offer a more revealing look at the gravity of the graphic.

Air

In Air, the fifth piece from Fuhrer’s portfolio to find it’s way into this feature, we see a surreal look at the world’s future that humankind is building towards. The absence of trees and greenery among the barren landscape, sans some dried blowing leaves and a small struggling patch of wild grass on the twisted metal remains of civilization. A mass of metal wreckage left behind with warning signs that accentuate the cowered state of mind that led to this end. The close-up reveals some apparent aircraft of destruction continuing the cycle. And did I mention, bubbles? Uh-huh.

Last Days

The last of David Fuhrer’s graphic work that we look at is the appropriately titled, Last Days. Not only for it’s position in the post, but for it’s dramatic and dark depiction of a destructive end. As deeply stirring as it is intricate, this emotive illustration is, once again, Fuhrer at his finest. The close-up displays the pieces profundity of design as the rain and ruins become clearer. Mixing with the innocuous cinema sign to add a touch of the familiar to the devastation.
